HOW TO BREW COFFEE IN A MOKA POT?

MATERIALS
Fresh beans
Fresh water
Kettle
Moka pot
Coffee grinder

MEASUREMENTS
We recommend 2 tablespoons of coffee per cup of water. For the more precise, that's 50 grams (1.8 oz) of ground coffee per 1 liter (34 oz) of water.
For the bold—use more. For the less bold… you already know.

THE METHOD

Step 1
DISASSEMBLE THE MOKA POT.
Unscrew and separate the parts of the Moka pot. Water goes in the base, coffee in the filter.
Once assembled and heated, the water will rise through the coffee and come out the spout into the upper chamber.

Step 2
BOIL THE WATER.
Yes—boil the water before adding it to the Moka pot.

Step 3
GRIND THE FRESH BEANS.
Grind the beans finely, but not too fine. Think fine sand or table salt—definitely not powder.

Step 4
ADD THE BOILED WATER TO THE BASE.
Pour enough hot water into the base to fill just below the safety valve (the small button on the side). Don't overfill!

Step 5
ADD THE GROUND COFFEE TO THE FILTER.
Fill and level it—do not press or compact it.

Step 6
ASSEMBLE IT.
Carefully place the coffee funnel into the base. Make sure no grounds are on the rim or threads.
Then screw the top and bottom parts of the Moka pot together. (Use a towel to avoid burning your hands.)

Step 7
HEAT THE MOKA POT.
Place it on a heat source over medium-low heat with the lid open. Keep the handle away from the heat to avoid burns.

Step 8
PATIENCE.
Relax. This step may take 5 to 10 minutes. A watched pot never boils!

Step 9
THE MAGIC.
Watch closely. Coffee will begin to gently rise through the spout. Lower the heat without stopping the flow.
Watch the dark, rich stream turn lighter and listen for a hissing sound—that means it’s done. Remove from heat and close the lid.

Step 10
STOP THE BREWING.
Wrap a cold cloth around the base or run it under cold water to stop the brewing and prevent bitterness.

Step 11
POUR. SAVOR. ENJOY.
Serve the coffee as soon as it stops bubbling.

Step 12
REPEAT. SHARE. WAKE UP AND GO.
